Men Who Have Periodontitis and Erectile Dysfunction Are at Higher Risk of Experiencing a Major Cardiovascular Event Within Four Years

A team of researchers led by the University of Granada (UGR) has shown that men who have both periodontitis and erectile dysfunction are almost four times at greater risk of experiencing a major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE).

It appears that erectile dysfunction in those men struggling with periodontitis should be considered a warning sign of potentially greater significant (cardiovascular) conditions and events in the near future. This includes a higher risk of the following conditions:

  • Cerebral infarction
  • Non-fatal myocardial infarction
  • Cardiovascular death
  • Heart failure
  • Acute coronary syndrome (stable and unstable angina)
  • Coronary artery bypass grafting
  • Percutaneous coronary intervention
