A recent study conducted by Regenstrief Institute in Indianapolis and the Indiana University School of Dentistry determined that denture wearers could be at greater risk of having nutritional deficiencies.

According to the article in the Dental Tribune, the study connected the laboratory values of nutritional biomarkers with dental records. The laboratory tests included complete blood count, basic metabolic profile, and lipid and thyroid panel tests. The research team then compared the nutritional state of 3,519 subjects who had previously received removable partial or complete conventional or implant- or abutment-retained dentures with the nutritional condition of 6,962 members part of a control group who had not had a prosthodontic intervention.

Along with age and sex, the authors took into account additional factors available in the electronic records, such as race, treatment history, and insurance status. The study used records spanning from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2018 of patients who had been treated at Indiana University School of Dentistry clinics, and nutritional markers over the course of two years were compared.
